Open API MCP Brings AI to Your tastytrade Account
One of the clearest advances in AI has reached active traders: a standard way to connect the models you already use to a live brokerage account.
tastytrade now allows brokerage accounts to be linked to AI models like Anthropic’s Claude, so customers can pull account data, research strategies, and place and manage orders in plain language. The service uses a Model Context Protocol (MCP) connection to reach account information over the secure tastytrade Open API.
MCP is Anthropic’s open standard for giving AI assistants real tools instead of just text. Once connected, your model works inside the permissions you set—no more copying data between windows, no more one-off scripts. You stay in the conversation, review every step, and keep control of every order.
Built for What You Trade
The connection covers the full range of what active traders trade at tastytrade: stocks, equity and index options, futures and futures options, crypto, and more.
That means real-time quotes, full option chains with Greeks (delta, gamma, theta, vega, IV), single-leg and multi-leg order placement (spreads, straddles, condors, and beyond), portfolio views, order management, transaction history, and preflight cost estimates before anything hits the market, backed by the derivatives-focused analytics tastytrade is built around.
What You Can Do
Ask in plain language and get answers grounded in your actual account and live market data:
- “What does my portfolio look like right now?”
- “Show me the option chain on MU for the March expiry with Greeks.”
- “Build a bull put spread on GLD with $300 max risk and show me the preflight cost estimate.”
- “Talk me through my open futures positions and the current term structure.”
- “Pull the real-time quote and IV on that SPX iron condor I have on.”
Connecting to Open API MCP
The MCP server runs locally on your own computer. Unlike a hosted connector, your credentials stay on your machine and connect directly to tastytrade and nothing routes through a third party.
Before you start, you'll need:
- A funded tastytrade brokerage account
- A supported AI client: Claude Desktop, Claude Code, Cursor, VS Code, Antigravity CLI, or Perplexity
- Node.js installed (a free, one-time download)
Step 1: Create your API credentials
- Create an OAuth client and refresh token—see tastytrade's OAuth2 guide, or my.tastytrade.com → Manage → My Profile → API
Step 2: Add the server to your AI client
- Open your client's connector settings and choose the option to edit the configuration file.
- Paste in the tastytrade MCP entry, then drop your three credentials into the fields provided. The exact snippet to copy is in the tastytrade MCP repo README.
Step 3: Restart and confirm
- Close and reopen your AI client. The tastytrade tools will appear in your available connectors.
- Ask a simple question like "what are my account balances?" to confirm the connection. The first time each tool is used, your client will ask for permission. You can approve it once or allow it going forward. Any action that places or modifies an order requires a separate confirmation before it is sent.

Getting Help from Your AI
One of the most useful things about the tastytrade MCP connection is that the model keeps all the functionality of an advanced AI assistant. It can survey news, search the web, and reason about catalysts like earnings dates or Fed meetings, then apply that to the positions actually in your account.

Trading Stocks and Crypto
Because the model can see your actual positions alongside live pricing, most conversations start with a question and end with an order.
- What are my current positions, and how much of my buying power is tied up?
- Make me a table of my equity positions with unrealized P/L and the next earnings date for each.
- I want to add exposure to semiconductors. What do I already own in that space, and where would that overlap?
- Give me the hard news on my three largest positions—analyst notes and earnings items only, no fluff.
- Create a limit order to buy $1,500 of AAPL, 2% below the current bid.
- Place a GTC order to sell my AMD shares at $210 and leave it working.
- What's my cost basis in bitcoin, and what would adding $500 do to my average price?
- Show me every fill I've had this month with the fees paid on each.
Trading Options and Futures with Your AI
This is where the tastytrade connection separates from a general brokerage MCP. Futures and futures options run through the same connection as equities and options—not a separate integration—so one conversation can move across the whole book.
- Which of my option positions expire this week, and what's my maximum risk on each?
- What's the IV rank on /CL right now relative to its 52-week range?
- I'm looking at a short strangle in the 45-day expiration on TSLA. Show me the strikes near 16 delta with the credit and the buying power effect.
- Now build a defined-risk version of that same trade and compare the two side by side.
- Pull the /MES option chain for the next weekly expiration with deltas and open interest.
- What's my total delta across the account if I include my futures and futures options positions?
- Roll my SPY put spread out to the next monthly expiration. Show me the net credit before you send it.
- What's the margin requirement on one more short strangle, and how much buying power would I have left afterward?
Why the Official Server Matters
Community-built MCP servers for tastytrade have been around for a while. The Open API MCP is the official one, from the source—secure, standardized, and maintained alongside the rest of the tastytrade Open API, on the same infrastructure active traders already route through.
There’s no advisor framing or performance promises—the account owner must confirm every trade. What changes is the path between the analysis you’re already doing and the ticket you’re ready to send.
