Analyzing Exposure with Options Greeks

Options Greeks measure the sensitivity of an option's price to various risk factors, and understanding how to use them together is essential for effective options trading. This article shows traders how to analyze Delta, Gamma, Theta, Vega, and Rho in combination. Interpreting portfolio-level Greek exposure, understanding how Greeks change as expiration approaches or volatility shifts, and using Greek analysis to construct and hedge positions.

Although it can feel like there is a lot to keep track of when trading options, tastytrade has the tools and features to help traders keep their exposure in check. Options Greeks are dynamic and can change tick-by-tick. However, the tastytrade trading platform has built-in features that empower traders to view their exposure in real-time or look at their theoretical exposure on a portfolio or position basis based on changes in time, price, and volatility.

Portfolio Metrics

Traders with open positions can view their portfolio's overall beta-weighted Delta, Theta, Gamma, extrinsic value, Vega exposure, and much more in the fully customizable Account Header Detail on the tastytrade trading platform. Position Metrics

Traders do not need to manually calculate their exposure during order entry. Instead, all tastytrade platforms will calculate exposure based on the real-time Greek metric. It is important to note that Greeks are dynamic, and the position's exposure can change after execution based on a range of factors like changes in the underlying price, time, and volatility. Trade Details During Order Entry

Traders do not need to calculate their exposure during order entry manually. Instead, all tastytrade platforms will calculate exposure based on the real-time Greek metric. Portfolio Risk Analysis Tool

Traders can view their theoretical exposure using the Portfolio Risk Analysis tool built into the tastytrade trading platform. It is one of the tabs on the “portfolio report,” which can be accessed by selecting the CAP REQ (capital requirement) button in the upper right-hand corner when you are in the Positions tab. Traders can view pricing scenarios of each option's leg and see the theoretical p/l, price of the option, Delta, Theta, Gamma, and Vega values could change based on ten different pricing scenarios by hovering their cursor over each profit/loss figure. Moreover, traders can adjust time and volatility and set various pricing scenarios. Make sure the options positions you want to analyze are selected then click on “Risk Analysis."

Analysis Mode

Aside from viewing the risk profile or any open position or prospective trade, traders can view the changes to Delta, Theta, Gamma, and Vega, and Rho by hovering their cursor on different price points along the x-axis of the analysis mode. This view can be selected along the top toolbar on the Trade page for prospective trades, or by right clicking on existing trades from the Positions tab. Moreover, traders can see the effect on the selected Greek metric by adjusting the time and implied volatility of the option's expiration in the pop-out menu along the right side of the platform.
